A Box of Tools for National HIV Testing Day 2011

This is the season for toolboxes. Sunday was Father’s Day – and tools are a popular gift for dads. Summer is the time when many of us pull out our toolboxes to work on home improvement or hobby projects.

So that got us thinking about the “tools” we have in our HIV prevention, testing and treatment “toolbox”.

Jupiter, Mars and the Moon will all be visited soon

Like pretty much every other agency in the government, NASA is likely to be hurting for money over the next few years. The end of the Space Shuttle program, which comes with Atlantis’ final flight next month, will free up some cash. But at best, NASA’s budget will be flat in 2012, and given the mood in Congress, “at best” isn’t something to count on. And thanks to the cost overruns plaguing the yet-to-be-launched James Webb Space Telescope, the agency’s science programs are especially vulnerable to cuts.

Calories, Not Protein or Carbs, Are Key to Weight Loss: Study

Curbing calories is the key ingredient for diabetics seeking to lose weight, and low-fat diets that are either high in protein or high in carbs are equally effective, researchers say.

I think there are two key messages from this study, said study lead author Jeremy D. Krebs, a senior lecturer with the school of medicine and health sciences at the University of Otago in Wellington, New Zealand. The first is that no matter what diet we prescribe, people find it extremely difficult to sustain the changes from their habitual diet over a long time.

Stress May Worsen Lung Function in Kids Breathing Dirty Air

Children who live in stress-filled homes experience more air pollution-related lung damage than kids in less stressful environments, a new study finds.

Researchers looked at the effects of traffic-related pollution and parental stress on 1,400 children, aged 10 to 12, in California. There were no significant associations noted between parental stress alone and lung function levels in the children.

But as exposure to traffic pollution increased, lung function decreased among children in high-stress homes.
